Why the ARTS are important to the Australian curriculum?

The arts entertain, challenge, provoke responses and enrich our knowledge of self, communities, world cultures and histories. The Arts contribute to the development of confident and creative individuals, nurturing and challenging active and informed citizens.

The Arts at Glenwood State School covers each of the 5 arts subjects:

  1. Dance, (Covered by HPE teacher and class teacher)
  2. Drama, (Covered by HPE teacher and class teacher)
  3. Media Arts, (Covered by HPE teacher and class teacher)
  4.  Music, (Taught by Specialist Music Teacher - Amy Merrit)
  5. Visual Arts (Taught by Specialist Visual Arts Teacher - Lexi Schembri)

The Arts are taught across bands of year levels:

  • Foundation to Year 2 -
  • Years 3 and 4 -
  • Years 5 and 6

in a Year A and Year B sequence.

The Arts is a learning area that draws together related but distinct art forms. While these art forms have close relationships and are often used in interrelated ways, each involves different approaches to arts practices and critical and creative thinking that reflect distinct bodies of knowledge, understanding and skills. The curriculum examines past, current and emerging arts practices in each art form across a range of cultures and places.
